Psychotherapy Specialties
My psychotherapy specialties include:
• Relationship conflicts.
It's common for clients to seek help with frustrations, communication
breakdowns, and impasses that arise between spouses,
boyfriends/girlfriends, parents/kids, managers/employees, and
others. Some of the frequent tasks in therapy include: learning and
improving communication skills, containing anger and anxiety, and
resolving differences. Also, sometimes one or both members of a couple
decide that a relationship needs to end. Therapy can often help
facilitate that process.
• Depression. I work with all forms of depression, from
chronic/recurrent, to postpartum, to acute depressions often triggered
by a loss, to a case of "the blahs." I also conduct free, 30-minute
screenings for depression, during which I ask questions, administer a
brief screening test, score it, interpret the score, and suggest what
you might do to feel better. I work with many clients who improve
depressive symptoms without medication, but if you become interested in
consulting with a doctor about medication, I'm happy to provide
referrals if you wish.
• Anxiety/Stress Management. Stress and all its siblings
-- anxiety, pressure, tension, nervousness, worry, fear -- I sometimes
call them the Stress Family Robinson. It can be a worse family to be in than the Simpsons! I work with clients to become more
effective at managing these feelings, and also on reducing them at
their source. As with depression, I work throughout the spectrum of
severity: from basic stress, to insomnia, to phobias and
obsessive/compulsive behavior, to panic.
• Self-Confidence. Experiences -- with family, intimate relationships, friends, job/career, sports, and others -- can at times erode self-confidence. I frequently work with clients to help chart a course of new choices that can rebuild self-confidence and self-esteem.
• Finding more meaning and purpose in life. Sometimes life doesn't feel satisfying and fulfilling enough. Although this is common at midlife, I work with clients of all ages to help them feel more engaged and alive in their day-to-day activities, relationships, and careers.
• Parenting/Stepparenting. Whether or not the kids are
involved in the therapy, I work with parents and step-parents on the
many challenges involved in family life.
• Grief/Loss. Sometimes therapy can aid the process of
integrating a loss, whether it be the death of a friend, family member,
or pet; a divorce; a layoff; or other important losses.
• Life-threatening illness. For those facing this kind of
illness -- and their loved ones -- therapy can sometimes be helpful at
a profoundly frightening time.
• Pre-marital counseling. For a couple without any specific
conflicts to present, I typically recommend an initial block of six
sessions in which the couple can explore some topics fundamental to
marriage.
• Job/Career. My previous career as an individual
contributor, hiring manager, and executive in the business world help
me to work with clients on issues of meaning, purpose, and conflict in
their jobs and careers.
If the issue you'd like to work on isn't listed above, please feel free
to get in touch anyway; I work on a wide variety of issues brought to
me by individual adults, couples, young children, adolescents, and
families. If we talk or email a bit, we might find that the issue
you're interested in is within my areas of expertise. If I don't have
the education, training, and experience to deal with it effectively,
I'll tell you. And then, if you'd like, I'll refer you to professionals
who do.
